Dr. Goupell is a professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland-College Park. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from Michigan State University studying binaural hearing, and had post-doctoral research positions researching cochlear implants at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and University of Wisconsin-Madison. The main research focus of his lab is to improve hearing with cochlear implants, particularly in the realms of sound localization, speech understanding in noise, and individual programming optimization. He teaches classes on hearing science, auditory anatomy and physiology, instrumentation, and research design. He regularly mentors postdocs, Ph.D., and Au.D. students in cochlear-implant-related and auditory perception research.
