The electric signal delivered by a cochlear implant is impoverished, relative to the normal acoustic signal. This results in speech and language difficulties for children and adults who use CIs, although their speech and language skills are much better than individuals with comparable levels of hearing loss who use hearing aids. Researchers at the CI Center of Excellence are focusing on speech and language skills of individuals with CIs in a number of areas.
